The Forks, Maine is a small plantation in Somerset County in central western Maine. The full-time population of The Forks is fewer than 50 people!
Recreational Activities
Despite its limited population, The Forks is a well-known and popular destination for adventure seekers. Tens of thousands of people travel to The Forks each summer for whitewater rafting and kayaking on the world-class rapids of the Kennebec River. Rafters are joined in the warm months by folks fishing the Kennebec and other small streams in the area. Other outdoor enthusiasts seek out hiking in the area — an easy walk to Moxie Falls, Maine’s highest waterfall, Moxie Falls is close to The Forks and the Appalachian Trail passes just south of The Forks. In the winter months, The Forks is a destination for snowmobiling. The Forks Area Trails Club maintains approximately 100 miles of top-quality groomed trails and connects to the larger Maine Interconnecting Trail System (ITS) 86, 87, and 89.
Lodging Options
Visitors to The Forks can find lodging to be a challenge. Primetime visitors during rafting and snowmobiling seasons need to book early to secure a room, cabin, or campsite in the area. A few independent businesses have popped up in The Forks to provide lodging and meals. However, the majority of available lodging is at local rafting company resorts.
The most central location for lodging in The Forks is at Crab Apple Whitewater. Crab Apple sits at the junction of Route 201, the main road through the area, and Moxie Road, which runs to the Kennebec River whitewater section put-in and other access points. Crab Apple is a third-generation family business that opened in 1981.

Crab Apple Whitewater is open May through October and offers many lodging options, including cabins, eight motel units that sleep 2-8, and suites with jacuzzis. Lodging is complemented by a restaurant, pub, outdoor heated swimming pool, outdoor fire pit, and planned activities, including daily refereed paintball games on custom fields.
