Whitewater rafting is a thrilling and exhilarating adventure. Paddlers in each raft can improve their enjoyment and safety during a trip with good techniques. The following are the most important rafting techniques to keep in mind.

Safety Equipment

Life Jackets & Helmets: Always wear a properly fitted life jacket and helmet while whitewater rafting.

Stability in the Raft

Feet: Rafters generally place their feet in front of them and under a cross tube (thwart) or in a foot cup attached to the floor of the raft.

Hips/Backside: Stronger rafters should be seated near the edge of the raft so that they can reach aggressively into the water to paddle.

Paddle Strokes

Forward Stroke: This is used to propel the raft forward. Place as much of the paddle below the surface of the water for maximum results. Paddle with your arms straight and rotate your torso for power.

Backstroke: A reverse motion used to slow down or steer the raft. Push the paddle backward in the water. Adding a fulcrum, or pivot, point on the thigh or hip can add significant power to the backstroke.

Turning the Raft: A raft team will mix forward and back strokes to turn the raft during rapids.

Team Coordination

Synchronization: Rafts negotiate rapids much better when all paddlers are in sync. The front paddlers set the pace and the back rows follow the leaders. If paddlers are out of rhythm, the raft can slow down and be less responsive when quick turns are needed.

Commands: Clear communication is essential. Common calls from the Guide might include “all forward” (paddle forward), “all back” (paddle backward), and “hold on” (grab the safety line and lean toward the middle of the raft).

Mastering these fundamental whitewater rafting techniques will not only enhance your enjoyment but also ensure a safer, more controlled experience on the water. By prioritizing safety equipment, maintaining stability in the raft, using effective paddle strokes, and practicing good team coordination, you’ll be prepared for any challenge that comes your way. Remember, the key to successful rafting lies in communication, teamwork, and a shared commitment to safety. So, gather your crew, stay focused, and embrace the adventure with confidence!
